Dear Monsieur Poincaré,
It is with much pleasure that I announce to you that the Royal Astronomical Society has today awarded to you its gold medal for your contributions to the astronomical science. You will shortly receive a formal intimation of the same fact from Sir William Huggins, the Foreign Secretary of the Society.22William Huggins (1824–1910).
I am especially glad that this event should have occurred during my tenure of the office of President. It will be my duty to present the medal to you at the annual meeting on the second Friday in February, which falls I think on the 9th of that month.33Darwin was president of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1899; his address appeared in the Monthly Notices (Darwin 1900).
We all much hope that it may be possible for you to be present in person on that occasion.
