Mittag-Leffler’s wealth was based on the fortune of Signe’s grandfather, Henrik Borgström, a Helsingfors tobacco businessman whose only child, Emilia, married the Finnish general Julius av Lindfors. Signe, being the only child of this marriage, received the whole of the fortune founded on Borgström’s commercial success. Mittag-Leffler used this money at once to found Acta Mathematica in 1882, and from then until the end of his life he remained its editor and lived in Stockholm. Grattan-Guinness (1971, 363–64)
